# New to Deriv – Confused About Synthetic Indices and Trading Hours

Hi everyone,

I’m new to Deriv and also new to online trading. I’ve been sifting through the platform and examining the different markets available, but I’m a bit lost on Synthetic Indices. I know they are simulated markets that act in a similar way to real ones, but I’m not exactly sure how they work, and what influences their movement.

Also, I have observed that these indices are available 24/7 as opposed to forex or commodities. Can I trade anytime, with no worries about market hours or weekends? Are there certain times that are better for volatility or for strategy testing?
